Vinyl books

Sonic Essay Books: To intervene directly on vinyl records with various mediums such as spray paint, acrylic paint, photo transfers, which allow me to reconceptualise and reactivate the embedded history of the vinyl LP. I deliberately paint on one side of the vinyl - the B-side retains the music label, indicating the tracks and the year the LP record was pressed. When stacked together, the vinyl records can be bound through the middle hole with hardware such as nuts, bolts and washers, forming an atypical meta-story book. The circular books can easily be taken apart and displayed in varied arrangements or instillations. The books are designed, when bound to have a pivot on the back end so they can spin as they would on a turntable.

Process: I prepare and apply a mixture of acrylic paint directly on two vinyl records. Facing each other, the two records are placed flat on the ground. The vinyl records are then pressed by stepping on them and applying my full body weight. Twisting while standing on the records enables full coverage of the paint. When separated, the end results are mirrored patterns much like an inkblot (the Rorschach test). Tree roots, veins, and the cosmos seem to emerge from the geometric vinyl. I can then spray paint and attach photo transfers and other materials such as wooden letters, etc. The vinyl circles, or sonic essays act like mandalas or cryptograms perhaps trying to put order into chaos. They idealize the past and exaggerate a contrast with the present.
